Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy as a Consequence of Repetitive Sports Head Injury: A Review
نویسنده
چکیده
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a disabling condition seen most frequently in athletes involved in high-impact sports. Physical and emotional abnormalities begin to display themselves later on in an athlete's life. Routine neuroradiographic imaging generally does not show any significant findings; however, newer MRI-based techniques, such as DTI, fMRI, and MRS, have shown promise for earlier detection. Three stages of the clinical presentation of CTE have been described. CTE likely results from progressive neuronal loss. Once the cascades are started, the symptoms of CTE become progressive. Sport-specific preventive strategies and early detection in our athletes is of vital importance in the management of CTE. Categories: Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Neurology, Neurosurgery

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy: A Review
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is a long-term consequence of single or repetitive closed head injuries for which there is no treatment and no definitive pre-mortem diagnosis. It has been closely tied to athletes who participate in contact sports like boxing, American football, soccer, professional wrestling and hockey. Risk factors include...

CONTEXT The diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) can only be made pathologically, and there is no concordance of defined clinical criteria for premorbid diagnosis. The absence of established criteria and the insufficient imaging findings to detect this disease in a living athlete are of growing concern. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION The article is a review of the current literature on C...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease occurring most commonly in athletes and is caused by repeated concussive or subconcussive blows to the head. The main purpose of this review is to evaluate the published literature on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in athletes participating in high-impact sports. In particular, we highlight the ...

Emerging evidence suggests that the risk of developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive neurodegenerative disease, is significantly increased in military personnel and contact sports players who have been exposed to repetitive trauma brain injury (TBI). Unfortunately there are no effective medications currently available for prevention and treatment of CTE. Here we demonstr...
